He's a highly observant narrator, for sure, and much more open-minded than most of the people around him. I think Melville's making all sorts of points through Ishmael's experiences, opinions, comments, etc. One of the most profound, in my opinion, is his ability to evaluate his own prejudices and then judge a man based on his character rather than his opinion. Queequeg, so far, seems quite a decent man - not what we might expect from the literary "dark pagans" of this period. But when I re-read MP a year ago I had a new appreciation for her wisdom, discernment and grace. And I had more sympathy for her - she was thrown into difficult circumstances but managed to rise above them. MP still isn't my favorite JA book but it definitely moved up on the scale. The version of MP that I read had a great intro (done by Tony Tanner) discussing Fanny, which helped me to enjoy the book without seeing her as too mousy. I am just as likely to read a book in a day as I am to read a book in a month. It depends on what's going on in my life. I love Persuasion, Ann and Wentworth are such great characters, you always feel so much for them and want them to wind up together and happy. The fact that they managed it after all that time that separated them makes for such a rich and sweet story. Now, as far as Mansfield Park goes, I'm not a huge fan of Fanny Price, but I do like her much more than the insufferable Emma. Enjoy every moment in Jane Austen's world.
